I often find blackmail rather stupid since the blackmail is done so poorly. Like, here is a fuzzy picture of you walking next to a fat old man, now fuck the entire school on camera or we will spread it. Are these kinds of stories stupid on purpose because its some guy's fetish that girls are braindead, or is it just poor writing.

The best one is "We took videos of ourselves raping you, so have sex with us or we'll publicly incriminate ourselves." I think the basic problem is that the Japanese have this cultural stereotype of the "pure", idealized heroine, and that's what they tend to start from when it comes to corruption, degradation and netorare stories. When they do netorare especially, they need to contrive a reason for such a pure, innocent maiden to do things that are inherently not in her nature, and there are only so many ideas that people have come up with for that. All of them are pretty flimsy, because you're trying to marry two pretty incompatible concepts: If the heroine is so damn pure, then they're not going to have done anything bad that one could actually blackmail them over. I suspect that's the reason why none of the setups for these things ever ring true, and I wouldn't be surprised if they've become jokey, self-aware cliches by now.
