They've mentioned it at times, but I haven't seen it talked about for years. I think it probably reached the conceptual stage and just stayed there.

Also was it just my imagination or was there talk about making a mainstream TA anime series?

There's always speculation about that, but there's no basis for it so far. One thing that keeps misleading people is that ZIZ/TEATRO will sometimes tweet out early-stage art for a Taimanin "anime", but this will only actually refer to a small promo video for one of the gacha games, or something.
