Were the plot sections in Hyouryuu Kangoku Chronos hard to translate due to not being very familiar with sci-fi terminology?
That was one reason, but ambiguity factored into a lot of it. Among the most obnoxious parts was trying to figure out how guns worked, because they're obviously laser guns, but they somehow take ammunition. With no explanation, I had to find noncommittal ways of translating the word for "bullets": shots, ammo, rounds, etc.
One of the problems that I encountered a lot was that the vague, context-based nature of the language led to tiny contradictions within the script, or between the script and the images, sound effects, etc. It's the sort of thing that tends to happen once or twice in any game, but it was worse than usual here. The most frequent form of this that I tend to encounter is the lack of distinct plural nouns, which sometimes creates scenarios where the artist interprets a different number of something than the writers intended: e.g. somebody using both hands to perform an action, when they could only logically be using one, because they're doing something else with the other one.
