Do you think MTL will progress to a point where it will translate Japanese to a good level or that capability is still a ways off due to the complexities in the language being too much to overcome

That hinges on whether the computer can be taught to understand context, slang and nuance, rather than simple pattern recognition. At this point, I wouldn't rule it out, but we are still a long ways away from that. Even if we reach that point, you also have to consider the fact that VN machine translation programs always send lines to the computer one at a time, in isolation. Even if an AI learns to understand context, the whole process of sending the text would have to be rethought, or that context simply wouldn't be there for it to work with.
