As a French speaking guy, I noticed that in Japanese VN and games there are a lot of characters with French names. I know there are some other names that are from other countries, but it seems to me French names are the most used (besides Japanese, of course).
Do some Japanese creators like the sound of French names more than other languages or am I hallucinating?
It's probably the way they sound, although it could also have something to do with Japan's minor cultural fixation with Paris, which they romanticize as a model of European culture and sophistication. And then they actually get there, and need counselling for life.

Have you ever been excited(or looked forward) to playing a vn or enjoying a piece of media that once you got to it, it has let you down completely or do you generally hold no expectations of stuff you want to play or indulge
I've obviously been disappointed by things before, and it just teaches you to not get excited about anything.

I heard that a 19-year-old was once caught using a stuffed horse to masturbate at a Walmart and he allegedly put the toy, despite it being covered in semen, back on the shelf like nothing happened to it. (And yes that is an actual news story.) Would you have purchased that toy if you could have?
Semen's not even the issue there. I'd have to burn it just for being touched by a brony.

Since you don’t the redesigns in the remake of Tsukihime, is there a particular redesign you particularly dislike?
Arcueid. They made her look more like your average genki schoolgirl, with the short skirt and stockings, whereas she had more of a graceful and mature look before. Ciel's technically worse, because she looks almost like a different character now, but at least they didn't make her a Saber clone.

Oh, yeah? Well, because this isn't a question, I'm not going to reply to it! Bet you feel stupid now!

Is it just me that HATE the stupid non-natural poses of characters? Like that absurd "hand-on-forehead" pose from Fuma in RPGX? I wish artists would be smarter in making poses that would be at least a little natural for poses used while the character is talking. Sorry, had to get that out of my system.
It's not bad if it's only occasional, but it shouldn't be overused. Kiryuu has been holding his glasses on for 14 years now.

Do you sometimes ever want to translate any non-eroge visual novel? (It doesn’t matter which one)
Not especially. I'm sick of the cheap emotional tricks that Japanese drama tends to play, so if there's nothing to balance it out, I would prefer to avoid it entirely.

Do you sometimes wish you could rebrand or consider doing so?
Not really, although I do feel guilty about becoming more famous than all of the other people who are trying to use the name "Rattan Man" for legitimate business reasons. I bet a lot of people go to them for furniture, and leave disappointed when it turns out there aren't any tentacles on it.

When translating, are there any points when you skip over a line of text and translate it later? For the record, it doesn’t matter if they’re from H-scenes or not and you don’t have to give a particular example
Yes. Especially if I'm not sure how something is supposed to be interpreted, and need to listen to the voice acting to be sure.

What’s the best thing about Tsuma Netori besides something like finishing it?
The only creative thing in the game is the scene early on when they use electrodes on Makoto's legs to make her rape herself with a dildo. That was the point when I was thinking that maybe not having a fantasy setting was going to force them to come up with ideas that were more original, and boy was I wrong.

Were the plot sections in Hyouryuu Kangoku Chronos hard to translate due to not being very familiar with sci-fi terminology?
That was one reason, but ambiguity factored into a lot of it. Among the most obnoxious parts was trying to figure out how guns worked, because they're obviously laser guns, but they somehow take ammunition. With no explanation, I had to find noncommittal ways of translating the word for "bullets": shots, ammo, rounds, etc.
One of the problems that I encountered a lot was that the vague, context-based nature of the language led to tiny contradictions within the script, or between the script and the images, sound effects, etc. It's the sort of thing that tends to happen once or twice in any game, but it was worse than usual here. The most frequent form of this that I tend to encounter is the lack of distinct plural nouns, which sometimes creates scenarios where the artist interprets a different number of something than the writers intended: e.g. somebody using both hands to perform an action, when they could only logically be using one, because they're doing something else with the other one.

Why is there so much BBC porn in AI generated slop content on Pixiv and why are people willing to pay for that kind of content?
It's lowest common denominator stuff. If your highest standard for what makes something hardcore is "the penis is brown", then you're probably also the sort of person who doesn't see anything wrong with having a computer shit out dozens of uncustomized, samey-looking images and flooding every single image site with them.

Before you started translating Hyouryuu Kangoku Chronos, did you think it was going to be a nightmare to translate the game or at least the H-scenes?
I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was. I would say that the monster scenes weren't as bad as I expected, but the plot sections were far worse.

What fighting games have you played besides Melty Blood? It doesn’t matter if you played them throughly by the way
Super Smash Bros., and that's it. And that was only when I was forced to keep my nephews entertained at family gatherings. I couldn't actually play it. I mained Sonic, and my strategy amounted to letting them kill each other while I hung out on the other side of the screen and spammed the "UR TOO SLOW" button. On the occasions when I couldn't avoid them, I would execute my "Fast-By Shooting" strategy, in which I just ran back and forth across a platform, and dash-kicked through anyone who tried to get in my way.

What was the first VN you ever translated (publicly or non).
Before Murasaki, I did a practice translation of Onmyou Kishi Towako, but I never released it because it wasn't good enough.
Whats the reason you started posting translation for VNs
I did the Taimanin Murasaki translation just for myself, but having done so, I figured that I might as well release it, since the only alternative back then was 2015-era Google Translate. Also, there were rumours at the time that MangaGamer would probably license the series, which is why I didn't do the thorough job that I really should have for that initial version.
and what is the VN that took you the longest time to finish or was the hardest to do
Taimanin Yukikaze 2. I had added enough stuff to it to make it about the length of TA3, and that was also the first game where I did a successive round of proofreading, owing to the chronological mod.

Speaking of evildoers and Taimanin Kurenai, what do you think of Tomari Reiichiro?
A deeply uninteresting character. You can tell they were going to do more with the mutation aspect, because they made sure to throw that in at the end as well, just like Tendou's backstory.

Since you think Tendou‘s backstory was handled poorly (and frankly I agree), how would you have incorporated it in the story without changing the backstory itself?
It just needs to be placed better in the story. It's thrown in there as an afterthought, right before he dies and the game ends, which means that it goes nowhere and has no room to breathe. It would be more interesting if they revealed the information about a quarter or third of the way through the game, and played into it. He's fairly generic and forgettable as just some guy who happens to be the one training her, but he would be stronger and more interesting as a duplicitous anti-villain who the audience knows is working against the people he's allied with. You could also incorporate that into the general corruption angle for Kurenai, because not only is she fighting the mind control that's telling her to be in love with him, but now he's revealed as the enemy side's parallel to her—someone who's a semi-outsider, part of a circle but not totally in line with them, and working against evildoers out of disgust and loathing of their practices.

In Taimanin Kurenai, was there a particular instance you felt the coloring looked especially bad? (For the record, this doesn’t just include H-scenes as sprites and backgrounds can count too)
No. It doesn't look terrible, exactly. It just looks "off". It's a flatter look than was usual for that period, and I don't think it worked very well with ZOL's art. His faces can be a little wonky (see every male character in that game), and that's made worse when you lose some of the definition that comes with the usual colouring style.

How do you feel about Aoi's style evolving since RPGX?
He was never a very consistent artist, as you can see from characters like Real and Ryuuji looking completely different in the early scenes of their games. Recently, I think he's gone way too far, to the point of characters having ridiculous proportions, or not looking quite like themselves anymore. I used to think Shiranui's breasts were absurd in TY1, but now Shizuru's breasts have reached that size, which means Shiranui's are even bigger.
Which girl do you like or dislike changing the most?
I'm not keen on the latest Asuka design. The aesthetic changes to the suit are fine, but her general look is off. However, I actually kind of hate his modern interpretation of Rinko more, because he keeps giving her this slightly unsure-looking face that completely lacks expression, and makes her look rather dull.

Why do so many people seem to struggle to separate fiction from reality? Whether it is violence and sex in movies, videogames, or an anime girl getting violated. Everyone keeps acting like it is happening to an actual person rather that some pixels on a screen.
You fapped to a lot of fucked up shit, maybe you know?
A few years ago, I was listening to the radio in the car, and the host was interviewing some absolute idiot psychologist about the topic of porn addiction. The thing she said that sticks in my head is—and I quote—"We know the human brain can't tell the difference between fantasy and reality." And what was the basis for this claim? Well, she brought up a situation in Australia, where a certain type of beetle had been observed trying to have sex with discarded beer bottles, because they confused them for other beetles. And if that's not enough to prove her point, I don't know what is.
I think my favourite example of this phenomenon is the topic of violence in video games. For years, moronic Republicans kept trying to brand games "murder simulators", on the basis that if an impressionable youth spent all their time shooting people in the face, they might get the idea to start putting this into practice in other situations, like at school, or in a mall, or know-knows-what-else. The poor kids might not be able to stop themselves. Anywhere they go, they see a head, they just have to shoot it. Oh, hello, Mrs. Johnson. That's a nice hat you're wearing. BANG!
So during this time, you had brave, courageous game journalists rubbing all thirty of their IQ points together to oppose the idea. They argued vehemently that video games do not, in fact, lead to violence, and they cited whatever studies or statistics or expert opinion they could use as evidence. But then, of course, years later, they all caught the social justice bug and promptly declared that video games were extremely sexist, and causing misogyny in players. You see, the real reason why women weren't into video games as much as men is that they were being blocked by this invisible force field of misogyny, which was so strong that if they ever dared penetrate it, they would be instantly traumatized, and have no choice but to accept hundreds of thousands of dollars in Patreon donations. How dare games contain prostitutes, or strippers? Women with breasts, and figures less than the width of a refrigerator?
And so, naturally, people challenged the journalists on this, asking how, if video games didn't cause violence, did they somehow manage to cause sexism? And there wasn't a good answer to this, because it's a fairly watertight argument. So instead, journalists began to decide: Video games do cause violence! Look at these other statistics and expert opinions that clearly show that people are affected by the media they consume! Obviously they lead to violent tendencies. Never mind all that stuff we said before.
And then, Donald Trump, in a totally uncharacteristic move, said something stupid online. He made a Tweet which, in part, blamed violent video games for criminal behaviour. This put those journalists in a deeply unsettling position: Either stick with their clearly righteous opinions, or be seen to publicly agree on something with Donald Trump. And gee, wouldn't you know it? All of a sudden, video games don't cause violence anymore! Obviously they don't. Man, what an idiot he is, huh?
So I guess what it comes down to is, people are stupid. They make up whatever suits them, for whatever side of whatever issue they've decided to take. If they want to think of the children, or fight sexism, or any issue like that, they'll just make up an excuse for why any fictional depiction of the problem has to change or go away. Although, that said, that doesn't explain why I really want to fuck a can of Coors.

In the spirit of international cooperation, I shall now attempt to breach the language barrier in the time-honoured way: By talking very slowly and loudly.
YOU NEED TO SEE THE GOOD ENDING. GET TO EACH CHARACTER'S ENDING, THEN RESTART. A NEW OPTION WILL APPEAR BEFORE THE FIRST SEX SCENE HAPPENS. ONCE THAT NEW ROUTE HAS FINISHED, THE SCENES WILL BE UNLOCKED.

How do you think the VN playerbase has changed since you started playing VNs? My impression is that VNs are now a lot more mainstream than they were 20 years ago, but on average also a lot less unique/ambitious as they used to be. Is the industry really stagnating, or are my rose tinted glasses getting the better of me?
I think you can categorize it in four broad phases:
- Visual novels as a concept are largely unknown in the West. Most of the games that get translated are eroge, but they're termed "dating sims" because the localizers don't know how to sell people on them. There isn't a culture around them yet, apart from the common bond of wanting to ejaculate to cartoon characters.
- Once the concept is more established, serious games begin to get translated more frequently, leading to a weeaboo fanbase and culture. The players care about the stories being told, and are consequently adamant about things like censorship, leading to controversies with games like Kazoku Keikaku.
- Tumblr finds out about VNs, and infests the scene with their notorious lack of taste. Hipsters realize that they can make low-effort crap in RenPy, and call themselves game developers for it. The existing culture, which is analogous to the culture surrounding anime, starts getting eaten away by this new one, which is more akin to the culture surrounding modern-day American cartoons. There are more and more little games which amount to self-insert quasi-autobiographies about how hard it is to come out as gay, or things like that.
- Steam becomes the go-to store for visual novels. Its accessibility allows more people to be exposed to VNs of both styles. The weeaboo culture is still there, but it's no longer as adamant about things like censorship—or if it is, there's nothing they can do about it. Steam is king, its rules are arbitrary, and everyone does whatever they need to to get their game on it. The market gets flooded not only with low-effort indie crap, but also high-effort indie crap like Stray Gods and Goodbye Volcano High. There's more shovelware to wade through than the fucking Wii catalogue. The newer culture is more entrenched, and there is some crossover, making it difficult or impossible for the original culture to regain control, or even segregate itself cleanly from the new one.
In addition to this, there's also the console situation in the East, where more VNs find themselves on platforms like the Switch, with similar consequences to Steam. I don't pay enough attention to serious VNs anymore to know the truth about that, but I get the impression that it's led to some watering down and genericizing of the medium—e.g., the Tsukihime remake, which is incomplete, all-ages, and makes certain characters look more like generic anime girls than the original.

From what you remember, which character in Alice do you feel currently has the most unused potential?
That could be almost all of them. The only characters who get extensive screen time are Lokithor and Alice herself. Arguably the most underdeveloped is Rosalia, because she doesn't even exist in the story until the very end.
